Netbook Computers - The Pro's And The Con's

Ever since laptops first came out our desire to have them smaller and smaller was growing. As computer technology advanced on all frontiers, everything started getting smaller. Mobile computing has been a driving force behind the development of most technologies in the last 5 years. Whether its the iPod, a mobile phone or a laptop computer, it had to be as small as possible. Smaller is better because its more mobile - which is at the heart of modern culture and the way we consume the internet.

The real challenge with laptops is the balance between size, speed and battery life. When energy saving processors lik the Intel Atom became more mainstream it opened up a new frontier in mobile computing. Asus was one of the first companies to jump unto this with what they called a "netbook" computer. Significantly smaller than a laptop, the 7 inch screen was much bigger than a mobile phone and much smaller than a laptop screen yet it was perfect for basic web browsing.

With all the elements and features of a normal computer, the only real difference is the speed. Netbook computers rely on the Atom processor because its much smaller and uses a lot less power. Unfortunately this processor is not nearly as powerful. Although a netbook can do everything that a normal computer can do, its simply too slow. I've had trouble doing basic things like playing music through Windows Media Player. This is also partly to blame for the lack of memory. Most netboks can only accommodate a 2GB DDR RAM chip to save space and minimize power consumption.

Probably my biggest frustration with a netbook computer is the keybord size. Unless you have hands the size of a 5 year old, its impossible to type on it. The keys are way too small and you end up pressing 2 keys at a time. Without being able to properly type anything - even if its just an email, can make netbooks redundant.

There are some advantages though and there definitely are some great uses for them. Its important that you don;t try and treat a netbook laptop like a normal laptop. If you want it to do something other than what its made for you will only find yourself frustrated. Its meant for surfing the web. Simple as that. Use it appropriately.

Organic Garden - Helpful Ideas and Tips

Organic gardening is growing in popularity as people increasingly see the need to avoid chemicals and synthetic products. Organic gardens also provide protection form genetically modified organisms (GMO) in the garden.

Those who take up organic gardening often are at a loss as to where to buy supplies. They don't know what products they need for soil nourishment or pest control. They may not know how much water to supply, or how to go about composting kitchen scraps for their gardens. They need more than a few organic garden tips and ideas.

Organic garden helpful ideas and tips are widely available, if you know where to find them. Here are a few places to begin your search.

Organic Garden Helpful Ideas

One of my favorite organic garden tips is this one. The most important thing you can do to control pests in the organic garden is to keep the soil healthy. Healthy soil produces healthy plants. Healthy plants, like healthy humans, are better able to withstand disease.

A second helpful organic garden idea I like is to control pests with ladybirds (ladybugs). These beautiful little red insects with shiny black spots control aphids naturally and totally. You can order them from several organic garden places on the Internet. Until they arrive, spray every part of aphid-infested plants with well diluted soapy water. Rinse with clear water.

My third favorite organic gardening idea is to plant guardian plants around and among tender vegetables. Marigolds make the organic garden border colorful, and ward off many pests. Onions and garlic are also great deterrents to pests that would like to break in and steal organic produce.

The Perfect Jean - Popular Body Types and Their Perfect Jeans

Are you tall? Are you petite? Do you have long legs? Do you have a large middle? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then you probably have struggled to find the perfect pair of jeans. In today's world, every woman has the same struggle trying to find the exact characteristics in a jean that will best fit her body. In this article, we will outline some of the more popular attributes that many women have and then give you our recommendations for the perfect jean.

If you are Tall with Long Legs.
This describes a woman who is over 5'7" and has a longer lower body, meaning she is easily able to wrap her legs around something. To suit your frame, you should go for jeans with at least a 36" inseam to accommodate your long torso. Hudson's "Supermodel Jean" is all the rage among, who else, Supermodels and tall women the same. Other great brands are Rock & Republic and Habitual who offer a large variety of options for tall women who are leggy.

If you are Slim with a Boyish Frame (No Hips).
This describes a woman who is narrow-waisted with no visible curves. Kate Moss is a great example of this type of frame. If you wish for jeans to fit your frame well, a straight leg or skinny jean would look great. Aim to buy jeans without any stretch, as these types of jeans will only slide because you have little to no hips for the material to cling to. Rock & Republic and Rich & Skinny are great brands while Brown Label's "The Rebecca Straight Leg" is an ideal style for women who have this shape.

If you are Petite.
The word petite covers two extremes of woman who are of a shorter stature. Raven is a great brand for petite woman in general.

*If you are Petite and Curvy.
This means you are 5'4" or under and have a full bust, smaller waist and thicker thighs. You define a Coke-Bottle shape. For you, a great jean needs to have a bit of stretch and should not have tiny back pockets. This little detail will make your rear look bigger than it is. Joe's Jeans "The Honey" and Paper Denim & Cloth "The MOD" are fan favorites if you have this frame.

*If you are Petite and Slim.
As before, this means that you are 5'4" or under, however you are a little more proportionally built with a smaller bust, small waist, and slimmer legs. Skinny Jeans with high heels is a great combination for your frame. The close-fitting jeans will give you volume while the heels give you height. Millard Fillmore "The Straight Leg" and Joe's Jeans "The Provocateur" are our picks for this type of frame.

If you have Full Hips, Thighs, and a Small Waist.
If this is your frame, you have a Coke-Bottle shape as well. Usually, when you purchase jeans that fit your hips and thighs, you have a gap at your waist. Some of the best jeans for you would be trouser-cut, wide-leg, and sailor style in darker washes. These would give your body a great streamlining effect. Favorites for this curvier figure are Aristocrat's "The Windsor Boot Cut" and GoldSign's "The Orchard Wide Leg". Both perform double duty with angled waist bands and stretch denim.

If you have a Larger Middle.
Many women, especially after having children, fall into this category. This frame is characterized by having a larger stomach that many times will hang over the waist band of low-rise jeans. The best jeans are those with a medium rise instead of a low rise and have extra stretch to accommodate your middle. Jeans with decoration around the waistband should be avoided, as the decoration will draw unwanted attention to your middle. Not Your Daughter's Jeans "The Tummy Tuck Jean" and Paige Premium Denim "The Rising Glen" are great options if you have this frame.

If you are Tall and Curvy.
You are one of the rare women who have earned the title "Amazon". Serena Williams is a great example of this voluptuous shape. You need to find jeans to accommodate your shape, which includes all of your curves and your height. Go for a jean with at least a 36" inseam that are stretch and preferably wide-leg. These three factors combined will give you an amazing and polished look. Hudson, Citizen's of Humanity, and Davis Kahn are brands that we highly recommend for women with this frame.

If you have Fuller Thighs.
If you have this frame, it is highly likely you have to go a size or two larger in jeans to find the perfect jean that fits you best. Dark denim boot-cut styles are a winner. Also, try to find a jean with at least 2% stretch to accommodate your thighs. Joe's Jeans "The Honey Jean" is one of the best for this frame.

No matter your shape or size, there is a perfect jean for you. Use this as a guide to find the jeans that will hug your body in all the right places. And remember, once you find the right jeans for you, shopping for them will no longer be a struggle. Good Luck & Happy Shopping!

A Good Reason To Use Plastic

Since gradeschool, we have been drilled that using plastic is bad for our health and the environment. Every major environmental group has condemned the use of plastics, plastic bags, plastic containers, plastic bottles, and other plastic materials at least once. Despite their warnings, plastics are still used and manufactured up to this day. Isn't it interesting that despite their bad-for-the-environment reputation, the plastic industry is still flourishing? There must be something that those environmentalists aren't telling us.

Anna Peterson, an environmental ethics professor at Florida's state university insists that plastics end up disposed in landfills, lakes, streams, and on roadsides where some curious critter might wander. A racoon, for instance, overwhelmed by the scent of nacho chips inside a plastic bag, might not be able to resist eating even the bag. Wildlife could choke and be poisoned by these, plus, these plastic bags can clog water systems, which can cause pollution. Another hazard posed by environmentalists is the potentially dangerous nature of plastic medical equipment. These can caused epidemics and the spread of diseases if not disposed of properly. Contact with these medical hazards could prove fatal especially if these are used on patients with contagious diseases.

But plastic manufacturers beg to differ, saying that "proper disposal" is the operative term. Otherwise, if disposed properly, these plastic bags, plastic containers, plastic bottles, and plastic materials are not a danger to the environment as much as papers are. They even asserted that over time, plastic materials are more beneficial to the environment than papers. Though paper materials are easily recyclable, they weigh ten times more than plastic and that make them heavier. Robert Bateman, a plastic manufacturer, affirms that papers use up and waste more energy during processing than plastic. In addition, plastic processing leave less waste than paper manufacturing. Profit-wise, it is cheaper to manufacture plastic than paper. Overall, plastic is the more practical choice because it cost less to make with plastic injection molds, leaves less waste, and uses less power. This is a fact usually obscured by the environmentalists.

From this vantage point, it seems to be tie between paper and plastic, but which is truly better for the environment? Garbage expert, Bill Rathje provides the answer to this dilemma. According to him, paper does not break down faster any more than plastic can in an average well-operated landfill even if they reach forty years. Since paper is bulkier, it takes more landfill area. Paper can aggravate the lack of landfill space. He says that taking the same amount and weight of both plastic and paper, plastic can fit comfortably in one truckload while it will take seven trucks to fit in the same amount of paper. What's more, wildlife-eating plastics are very rare, and in most cases, are purely anecdotal. In these perspectives, it's better to use plastics, plastic bags, plastic containers, plastic bottles, and other plastic materials rather than paper. Just remember to dispose of them properly so no poor animal will have to deal with a plastic stuck in its throat.

Forget The Countdown and Think What's Relevant

Something old... Something new... Something borrowed...

You know how the saying goes. You might have already been flipping through the table of contents of several wedding magazines and seen the generic nine-month wedding planner checklist. I say, "Forget the timetable!" Why forget these nine-month planners? The creator and authors of the checklist assumes everyone's engagement period will be for nine months. I don't like to assume that. Aren't you going to cross out parts of your wedding to-do list according to what's top of your priority list? Sure, use the nine-month wedding planner checklist to get ideas of what to add to your to-do list - but more importantly, create your must-haves.
Creating Your Top 3 Must-Haves

When you look at your nine-month checklists, it typically tells you to "Find and book your wedding locations first!!!" Why would you put it on the top of your priority list if you were really flexible about where you are going to hold your ceremony? When I was planning my wedding, I created a Top 3 list of my wedding priorities:

1. Since I shoot-from-the-hip on occasions usually being behind the camera than in front of the camera and am a photo album junkie, finding the right photographer to capture my big day was very important to me.
2. All throughout my childhood, my parents always celebrated special occasions with good eats (great homemade food or at a fancy restaurant) and naturally I became a good connoisseur (eating the food? not cooking it). The menu for our reception was therefore added to my "Must-Haves."
3. What's a party without great music! I love, love, love to dance. I used to go dancing at least four days a week. Dancing and great music starts the true celebration of getting friends and family to participate in the event of your marriage. My fiance and I even took ballroom dancing lessons with my parents.

Now that you have your Top 3 Must-Haves, you can decide to be flexible in planning and budgeting for the rest of your wedding. Use your must-haves to adjust your schedule and priorities? don?t stress out over the smaller details.

Can Blogging Help You Market Your Product Online?

Here’s a question I’ve been curious about lately: should marketers add blogging to their arsenal of marketing tactics? Will it help sell more products and services?

Or is it – as I suspect -- an utter waste of time? A pure vanity publication that won’t pay you back even one thin dime for your effort?

First, a definition. “A blog is an online journal,” explains blogging expert Deb Weil in her Business Blogging Starter Kit (www.wordbiz.com). “It’s called a journal because every entry is time and date stamped and always presented in reverse chronological order.”

The theory is that if you are an information marketer – or, if you publish information to establish your expertise in a niche industry or field – blogging should be part of your publishing arsenal.

According to Deb, a business blog is “a platform from which to lobby, network, and influence sales. It’s a way to circumvent traditional media and analysts. And blogging can be done instantly, in real time, at a fraction of the cost of using traditional channels.”

Now here’s my hesitancy in recommending blogs as a marketing tool: I have yet to find a single marketer who says that a business blog has gotten him a positive ROI, or return on investment.

I know plenty of online marketers who make millions of dollars a year from their Web sites and e-zines, for instance. But I’ve not seen a blog whose creator says that the time and effort spent on their blog has directly put money into their pockets.

“I would say that, with few exceptions, blogs are not yet direct income producing resources in and of themselves,” says blogging authority Paul Chaney (www.radiantmarketing.biz). “Their value lies in the fact that they help raise one’s stature relative to their respective field.”

In my observation, there are two major problems with blogging as a business-building tool.

The first is that most of the blogs I encounter are rambling, streams-of-consciousness musings about a particular topic of interest to the author, largely bereft of the kind of practical, pithy tips that e-zines, Web sites, and white papers offer.

As Deb says, reading the blog is like reading the author’s journal or diary. And unless you are a guru or celebrity whom others worship from afar, people are simply not going to flock to your blog to discover your latest thoughts on life.

The second problem with blogs is one of distribution.

With an e-zine, once the reader subscribes, he gets the e-zine delivered to him electronically every week or every month -- or however often you send it.

But with a blog, the reader has to go out and proactively look for it. And since your contributions to your blog may be irregular and unscheduled, he has no way of knowing when something new of interest has been added.

One big advantage of blogs, according to Paul Chaney, is that having a blog can help pull traffic to your Web site.

“The search engines, especially Google, love blogs,” says Paul. “You’d be amazed at how many of your posts will end up in the top ten returns. If search engine optimization is a concern to you, blogs are the best way I know to move up the ladder as well as increase your page rank.”

“I confidently predict that blogs will soon be a key piece of an effective online marketing strategy,” says Deb Weil. “Ultimately, they’re nothing more than an instant publishing tool, one that makes posting fresh content to the Web within anyone’s reach. No tech skill or knowledge required.”

And that’s another one of my complaints with blogs in particular and the Web in general: the ease with which people can post and disseminate content. “The best thing about the Web is that anyone can publish on it; the worst thing about the Web is that anyone can publish on it,” a computer magazine columnist once observed.

The problem is that there is already too much content, and we don’t want or need more. Analysis, wisdom, insight, advice, strategies, ideas – yes. But raw information, data, or content – no. And from what I can see, blogs serve up almost none of the former, and tons of the later.

Blogs are, by virtue of being a form of online diary, like diaries: rambling, incoherent, and more suited for private thoughts than public consumption.

If you have something of value to share, there are many better formats for doing it online than by blogging, including white papers, e-zines, and Web sites.

Even bulletin boards are interactive, so they have value by virtue of shared opinions, dialogue, and engaging conversation which may be listened to openly and publicly.

But most blogs seem to be the private idiosyncratic musings of an individual, without censure or editing of any kind. And the result is like porridge: a gloppy mess, tasteless, and not very satisfying.

Until that changes, I can’t see starting and maintaining a blog of your own, unless you are bored and looking for something to do, or require an outlet for self-expression. And if the latter is the case, well … why not just buy and keep a diary instead?

Racism

The doctrine of racism asserts that blood is the marker of national-ethnic identity and postulates that innate, inherited characteristics biologically determine human behavior. With respect to the ultimate value of a human being, the racist places a higher value on his or her membership in a “race” than on his or her individuality. Racists define national-ethnic identity through the myth of “pure inherited blood,” though in practice they can only point to differences in visible but biologically superficial characteristics such as skin, hair and eye color.

Many intellectuals, including scientists and historians, have lent pseudoscientific support to racist thinking. In continental Europe, particularly in Germany and German-speaking Austria, nineteenth century racists perceived the highest human value as membership in a “collective racial nation.” Nineteenth century racist thinkers, such as Houston Stewart Chamberlain and Guido von List as well as racist politicians like Georg von Schönerer exerted a significant influence on many in the generation of Adolf Hitler.

Racism, including racial antisemitism, was always an integral part of German National Socialism. The Nazis perceived all of human history as the history of a biologically determined struggle between races. They postulated that political movements such as Marxism, communism, pacifism, and internationalism were anti-nationalist and reflected a dangerous, racially based Jewish intellectualism.

In 1931, the SS established a Race and Settlement Main Office (RuSHA) to conduct race "research" and to determine the racial suitability of prospective candidates for SS membership and potential spouses for SS members. During the war, RuSHA experts made pseudo-scientific determinations of who was German and who had the “racial potential” to be German. Such determinations could mean the difference between life and death, as in cases in which a pregnancy resulted from a sexual relationship between a Polish forced laborer in Germany and a German woman. If deemed by the “race examiner” to be a Pole incapable of “Germanization,” the Polish father was likely to be hanged.

Two years after the Nazis came to power, in 1935, the German government decreed the Nuremberg Laws, which codified a supposedly biological definition of Jewishness. The Nazi leadership considered the so-called Jewish race to be not only the most inferior of “races,” but the most dangerous, since the Nazis attributed to the Jews inherited talent to mobilize the inferior, but more numerous “races” against the so-called superior races in a titanic biological struggle. Having “defined” Jewishness, the Nazi implemented a policy aimed at the physical elimination of the European Jews during World War II.

Nazi racists had always viewed the mentally and physically disabled as blemishes upon the genetic landscape of the so-called master race and, insofar as they were capable of conceiving children, as a biological danger to the purity of the German Aryan “race.” After careful planning and data collection during the summer and autumn of 1939, German physicians murdered people with mental and physical disabilities or illnesses who resided in institutions throughout Germany. The Nazi leadership and the German health care community euphemistically referred to the series of operations aimed at the physical annihilation of the so-called unfit as "euthanasia".

During the war, German physicians conducted bogus medical experiments seeking to identify physical evidence of German Aryan racial superiority to other so-called races. Despite killing countless prisoners in the course of these experiments, they could not find a scientific basis for their racial theories. Indeed, despite attempts of racists for two hundred years to discover "scientific" evidence of inherited inferiority of certain so-called races, biological science does not support the racist notion of racial differences between different groups of human beings that go beyond superficial external physical characteristics, such as skin or eye color. Moreover, there is no scientific basis for the notion that possession of a certain skin or eye color denotes superior or inferior physical or mental health or abilities or inherited personality traits.

The Nazi regime targeted Roma (Gypsies) as “racially inferior” and sufficiently “dangerous” to warrant elimination through mass murder. During twelve years of Nazi rule German Roma were incarcerated in prisons, labor camps and concentration camps. During World War II, the Germans, consistent with Nazi racial policy, shot Roma and deported them to killing centers.

Also included among the so-called inferior races in Nazi ideology were the Slavic peoples of Eastern Europe and the Asian ethnic groups of the Soviet Union. During World War II, the Nazi leadership set about what they referred to as an "ethnic housecleaning" in occupied Poland and the Soviet Union. This policy included the murder and annihilation of enemy "races." The Germans carried out systematic mass killings of persons considered to be members of Polish and Soviet political, cultural, and intellectual elites, and systematically selected from among captured Soviet prisoners of war persons perceived to have “Asian” or “Mongolian” characteristics in order to shoot them.

The Nazis also perceived German residents of African nationality or descent as inferior and dangerous and planned for their eventual disappearance -- within a generation -- through a mass sterilization policy. Though this policy was not consistently applied, the German authorities routinely and viciously persecuted and discriminated against German residents of African descent.

From their racism, the Nazis drew the practical consequence that “inferior peoples” had to either be physically eliminated altogether immediately by mass murder or within a generation by sterilization -- as in policies toward Jews, Roma, persons with disabilities living in institutions, and German residents of African descent -- or intellectually decapitated through mass murder of the leadership elites and reduction of the surviving population into an reservoir of uneducated forced manual laborers.

Telegraph ghost story writing competition

The ghost story is having a new lease of life. It was at its most popular in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, before being overtaken by the horror story, which began to thrive with the horror film. But think of coffin lids opened slowly by a skeleton hand and mummified corpses – and laugh. In piling it on so thick, horror quickly became comic.

A good ghost story is never funny. It is too near to us. Perhaps in order to find it convincing we must believe that it could possibly happen. I do not know of any “true” horror stories, but there are thousands of true ghost stories, beginning with those told by the flickering firelight in the caves of prehistoric man. Every region of the British Isles has its local ghost stories, and every country and culture has its repeated tales.

To be any good, a ghost story needs a structure, characters, a narrative line (dialogue is optional). Above all, the ghost must have a purpose. It may be revenge for harm suffered. It may be to explain some past incident. It may be to protest, to offer information – the whereabouts or contents of a will, a murdered body or the identity of a killer.

I have never written a ghost story merely to evoke a shudder. I cannot see the point in simply making people afraid. I want to do more. I want the reader to ask questions, to ponder, to be intrigued and to create an atmosphere from which the story will emerge.

Atmosphere is essential to a ghost story. How does it come about? By evocative description and a sense of place – perhaps the traditional empty, haunted house at night. Buildings are important. But a deserted office block at night in an empty city centre could be a place full of ghosts.

Why the fuss about Dr Kermit Gosnell? Abortion is a human right, isn’t it?

In the past few days the worldwide media has reacted with shock regarding the ‘baby killer’ doctor Dr Kermit Gosnell. Dr Gosnell is a late term abortionist in the US whose clinic has been slammed for carrying out illegal late term abortions and putting women’s health at risk. He is accused of forcibly delivering and executing babies with scissors.

Abortion is carried out legally and routinely in many countries around the world. It always involves the death of the unborn child. Late abortions sometimes involve ‘forcibly delivering’ the baby although usually the baby is given a fatal injection beforehand to avoid a live birth. That is the only difference between Dr Gosnell’s practice and standard procedure.

Whether legal or illegal, many women suffer mental and physical risks as a result of the abortion process, occasionally including maternal death. They are not informed of the true facts about abortion, so that they often make the decision without knowing the enormity of what will happen to their babies.

The outrage felt by the media at the terrible scenes at Dr Gosnell’s clinic is fully justified. However why is the media not equally forthright when abortions are carried out as a standard procedure, using tax-payers’ money? Babies are still torn limb from limb, occasionally born alive and left to die, their organs used as ingredients in vaccines or for medical research.

Abortion is legal in the UK up to birth in cases of disability, which is a severe breach of human rights for the disabled. 200,000 abortions are carried out in the UK annually. The ProLife Alliance asks why is there no outcry? Why is this legal?

The only conclusion can be that the world prefers not to know what happens behind the doors of an abortion clinic. As long as the baby dies behind a hygenic façade and is disposed of out of sight, we can all pretend that abortion is a ‘human right’, not murder, legal or otherwise.

Angry Husbands Don't Have To Be Tolerated

All too often, wives put themselves into a position where they will just simply tolerate the angry outbursts of their husbands, rather than rock the boat. It should be mentioned right from the first though, this is in respect to non violent husbands and their angry outbursts. Although these are abusive in nature, they are not physically abusive, nor do they create a fear for physical safety. The types of situations that are outside of this realm, should be handled on the advice of professionals who are trained in these matters.

The type of anger abuse that this article is referring to is the snappy hot head husband who flies off the handle, every time something doesn't suit him. This is the guy who can be in the middle of the supermarket, and has no difficulty raising his voice at you or others, and humiliating them. This type of angry husband simply does not have to be tolerated.

You will soon find that perhaps giving him a taste of his own medicine, may be enough for a wake-up call. Before going to these measures though, the first step is to try and discuss the anger issue with him. There is a chance that he doesn't realize that he is flying off the handle to the extent that he is. He may also not realize just how embarrassing and humiliating this is, when it takes place in a public setting.

The key to handling his angry outbursts, is not to tolerate them no matter where they occur. If you are going to allow him to go into a rage at home, when no one is around, then only get upset when this happens in public, you are sending mixed messages.

It also has to be kept in mind, that it doesn't matter whether the anger is directed at you, someone else, or self directed. It is not acceptable. Of course everyone has their moments where their temper gets the best of them, and this can be tolerated. It is when the occurrences of temper mismanagement are out of control, that it becomes an issue.

Often wives that are subjected to this type of behavior will start to turn down family and friend invitations to functions, for fear of having to deal with an anger outburst. Or when it does happen, they will make excuses for the behavior. This is just feeding into the problem. Your husband is simply not being held responsible for his actions. If you are a wife that is in this situation, you will find that your friends and family will tolerate the behavior for your sake, and not for the sake of your husband. People that are caught in this type of situation, would rather try to diffuse the matter, and try to prevent it from escalating to where it ruins the social event.

You as the wife must make your husband aware of his angry outbursts. Chances are he knows within himself that he has an anger management problem, but will not consider doing something about it, until he becomes aware that it is not going to be accepted by others, and mostly you as his wife.

Learning to Lie

Kids lie early, often, and for all sorts of reasons—to avoid punishment, to bond with friends, to gain a sense of control. But now there’s a singular theory for one way this habit develops: They are just copying their parents.

In the last few years, a handful of intrepid scholars have decided it’s time to try to understand why kids lie. For a study to assess the extent of teenage dissembling, Dr. Nancy Darling, then at Penn State University, recruited a special research team of a dozen undergraduate students, all under the age of 21. Using gift certificates for free CDs as bait, Darling’s Mod Squad persuaded high-school students to spend a few hours with them in the local pizzeria.

Each student was handed a deck of 36 cards, and each card in this deck listed a topic teens sometimes lie about to their parents. Over a slice and a Coke, the teen and two researchers worked through the deck, learning what things the kid was lying to his parents about, and why.

“They began the interviews saying that parents give you everything and yes, you should tell them everything,” Darling observes. By the end of the interview, the kids saw for the first time how much they were lying and how many of the family’s rules they had broken. Darling says 98 percent of the teens reported lying to their parents.

Out of the 36 topics, the average teen was lying to his parents about twelve of them. The teens lied about what they spent their allowances on, and whether they’d started dating, and what clothes they put on away from the house. They lied about what movie they went to, and whom they went with. They lied about alcohol and drug use, and they lied about whether they were hanging out with friends their parents disapproved of. They lied about how they spent their afternoons while their parents were at work. They lied about whether chaperones were in attendance at a party or whether they rode in cars driven by drunken teens.

Being an honors student didn’t change these numbers by much; nor did being an overscheduled kid. No kid, apparently, was too busy to break a few rules. And lest you wonder if these numbers apply only to teens in State College, Pennsylvania, the teens in Darling’s sample were compared to national averages on a bevy of statistics, from academics to extracurriculars. “We had a very normal, representative sample,” Darling says.

For two decades, parents have rated “honesty” as the trait they most wanted in their children. Other traits, such as confidence or good judgment, don’t even come close. On paper, the kids are getting this message. In surveys, 98 percent said that trust and honesty were essential in a personal relationship. Depending on their ages, 96 to 98 percent said lying is morally wrong.

So when do the 98 percent who think lying is wrong become the 98 percent who lie?

It starts very young. Indeed, bright kids—those who do better on other academic indicators—are able to start lying at 2 or 3. “Lying is related to intelligence,” explains Dr. Victoria Talwar, an assistant professor at Montreal’s McGill University and a leading expert on children’s lying behavior.

Although we think of truthfulness as a young child’s paramount virtue, it turns out that lying is the more advanced skill. A child who is going to lie must recognize the truth, intellectually conceive of an alternate reality, and be able to convincingly sell that new reality to someone else. Therefore, lying demands both advanced cognitive development and social skills that honesty simply doesn’t require. “It’s a developmental milestone,” Talwar has concluded.

This puts parents in the position of being either damned or blessed, depending on how they choose to look at it. If your 4-year-old is a good liar, it’s a strong sign she’s got brains. And it’s the smart, savvy kid who’s most at risk of becoming a habitual liar.

By their 4th birthday, almost all kids will start experimenting with lying in order to avoid punishment. Because of that, they lie indiscriminately—whenever punishment seems to be a possibility. A 3-year-old will say, “I didn’t hit my sister,” even if a parent witnessed the child’s hitting her sibling.

Most parents hear their child lie and assume he’s too young to understand what lies are or that lying’s wrong. They presume their child will stop when he gets older and learns those distinctions. Talwar has found the opposite to be true—kids who grasp early the nuances between lies and truth use this knowledge to their advantage, making them more prone to lie when given the chance.

Many parenting Websites and books advise parents to just let lies go—they’ll grow out of it. The truth, according to Talwar, is that kids grow into it. In studies where children are observed in their natural environment, a 4-year-old will lie once every two hours, while a 6-year-old will lie about once every hour and a half. Few kids are exceptions.

One in ten women regularly consumes organic food during pregnancy

The growth of the organic food and personal care product sectors over the past decade-or-so has been truly astounding, with reports indicating, for instance, that organic fruit and vegetable sales increased by almost 375 percent between 2000 and 2010 And now, a new report out of Norway has found that one in ten pregnant Norwegian women has gone organic.

Researchers from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health evaluated roughly 65,000 pregnant women from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, assessing their organic buying habits in six categories: milk and dairy products, bread and cereals, eggs, vegetables, fruit, and meat.

"We know little about the consumption of organic food during pregnancy, and the goal of this study was to find out what is consumed and the characteristics of women who choose organic food," said Hanne Torjusen, a Ph.D. student who worked on the study.

They found that women who chose organic during their pregnancies had varying nutritional habits and lifestyle preferences. Some of the women were low income, others were students, and some even smoked or drank during their pregnancies, which are considered to be generally unhealthy behaviors. In other words, it was not simply the well-to-do, health-guru women that recognized the value of consuming organic food.

"We see that although there are several elements that are consistent with health recommendations, organic food consumption in pregnancy is not unambiguously associated with what is perceived as a healthy lifestyle -- those with the highest education and income," said Torjusen. "This shows that it is important to take into account other factors besides education and income in the further research of possible health effects of organic foods in the diet."

Research has indicated that organic food generally contains denser nutrient profiles and more vitamins and minerals than conventional food. This idea is supported by a study published in the Journal of Applied Nutrition that found that the nutritional value of food depends on how and in what conditions it is grown
